Abstract

In this study, push-up load tests of soil plugs using two different spherical sizes assemblies (binary mixture) were carried out with various ratios of height of soil plug, H, to diameter of soil plug, D. A binary mixture can be characterised by two parameters, namely the particle size ratio, α, (the ratio of large diameter, dL, to small diameter, dS) and the weight ratio of small particles, WS. Rigid alumina balls having diameter of 1, 2, 3 and 4 mm were employed to form the binary mixtures. The particle size ratio, α, was set at 2, 3 and 4 with a constant small diameter of 1 mm, while the weight ratio of small particles, WS, was varied from 0 % to 100 %. Prior to the push-up load tests of soil plugs with various α and WS, element tests of the binary mixtures including maximum and minimum density tests and direct shear tests were carried out. The influences of α and WS on the performance of soil plug as well as on the strength characteristic of granular assembly were discussed based on the experimental results.
